To support a work/life balance, the patient access department has offered precert employees the option of telecommuting. In accordance with the hospital’s HIPAA policies, employees are not permitted to print patient records at their homes. To make telecommuting feasible, they use PixCert to capture precert, authorization and eligibility records and FaxCert the records to the insurance company through Tracker. Management monitors productivity through usage reports and has found that telecommuters are up to 18 percent more productive when working from home. Results include lower stress levels, less drive time, improved employee retention rates and fewer office space concerns. The department currently has five telecommuters and is in the process of adding more.
